Berkeley

 26th Oct 2014

The weather forecast was cloudy and grey all day, but it didn't rain.

Berkeley was a complete change, outside our normal range for walks & the history was very interesting.

We started East of Berkeley seeing some of the town, including the church and the castle,

home of the Berkeley family for 850 years.

Then we went past the hunting lodge where they kept and still keep the horses and dogs,

before walking through their deer park, where there were magnificent ancient oak trees

presumably planted by the family in very early days of the estate.

The castle was one of the March Castles built to keep out the Welsh in 1067.

After that we went towards the Severn Estuary, saw many sea birds, the deserted nuclear power station

and then Sharpness Docks, before returning along a lovely old lane to Berkeley.
